PRECONCEPTION COUNSELING

Preconception Counceling

For many women, a safe healthy pregnancy starts with careful planning and preparation.

That time of planning is often an exciting one, but for some women and their families it can also be trying, particularly if the pregnancy is considered high risk. At ROC, we offer preconception counseling to help guide patients through the process of trying to conceive.

During this counseling, we will discuss various aspects of pregnancy and help you actively plan for a healthy one. Topics covered will include:

  • Family history and the family history of your partner to provide insight about any genetic conditions or disorders that could potentially be passed down to the child. Conditions to be aware of include hypertension or high blood pressure, diabetes, birth defects, intellectual disability, autism, and any conditions that seem to run in the family. Your provider will also want to know if twins or multiples run in either family.

  • Your general medical history so your provider can get a picture of your personal health before pregnancy. You’ll discuss things like pre-existing medical conditions, past surgeries, hospitalizations, or transfusions, any allergies you have, and any medications you may be taking.

  • Your OB/GYN history will also be discussed including menstrual history, any previous pregnancies, contraceptive use, STDs if applicable, history of uterine abnormalities, and any vaginal infections or abnormal pap smears.

During the preconception counseling, you may also have a physical exam and lab tests, and your partner may undergo some testing as well. Your provider may give you suggestions regarding lifestyle changes that could help with conception and a healthy pregnancy. Healthy outcomes are our primary goal at ROC, and we will work with you and your partner to ensure the best possible outcomes for your family.
